The discussion surrounding remakes goes back and fourth sometimes, and I'll be honest, I find this obsession with wanting literally every single video game to be remade to be exhausting if not downright offensive.

I was already rolling my eyes, but the straw that ultimately broke the camel's back was Silent Hill 2. It really bugs me that this once strange game, once defined by it's uncanny acting and dream-like surreality... was remade and homogenized into a fairly standard horror game that checks all the boxes for what *normal* voice acting and gameplay is supposed to be.

And so many people judged it to be objectively better...

Now, I'm not gonna mince words, but one of the main reasons I get so frustrated is because people are simply just blitheringly fucking stupid. So many of the big remakes, and so much of what people ask for in remakes, are about bringing more standardized, modern conventions to older games.

It has nothing to do with artistic merit, their brains have just turned to mush and they judge the quality of a game based on how frictionless the experience is to get to the finish line, streamlining the experience instead of sticking to unique quirks.

It's just one of those cold facts of life, but people like comfort and stability in their media. They don't like to think and they don't like to be challenged. Those who play the game win, and the nail that sticks out gets hammered down.

So, it's not a popular opinion, but a lot of the appeal of these older titles comes from the fact that they were made in a very specific time made by very specific people. You take away the fact that Chrono Trigger came out in 1995, and you take away a lot of what made it so good in the first place.
