Okay, last time we ranked Kamen Rider, so let's rank Super Sentai this time. Keep in mind I still haven't seen every single season, so I don't have an opinion on Boonboomger or Gozyuger at the time of writing. If you want to know what the worst sentai is, it's Sun Vulcan, and then Turboranger is mid as hell.
Number 15: Gorenger (1975)

The reason the very first season ended up cracking the list is because the cast here is actually pretty memorable. I was really surprised at how strong the pink ranger was considering the time period. The yellow ranger is my least favourite though, which is “the joke is that he eats”, it’s a trope that you see in a lot of Japanese media when they don’t know which personality to give to a character. It’s not perfect and dated in some respects, but it is a classic for a reason.
Number 14: Denziman (1980)
.jpg)
It’s here where Super Sentai as a franchise really starts to solidify, and it features a lot of style and flair. This is the first season to air after Japanese Spiderman, so it's the first to feature a transforming robot, as well as the first to feature actual visors on the helmets.
This is a season which also features Machiko Soga, who just lights up the screen no matter who she’s playing. The cast is pretty likeable, and the season overall is very cool. If you’re looking to start with some of the older seasons, I would ether recommend this one, or jump to it right after Gorenger.
Number 13: Kakuranger (1994)
.jpg)
When looking at all the seasons the original Power Rangers took footage from, this one’s a huge step up from Zyuranger. Sorry, guys. The intro is amazing, it features one of my favourite female rangers, the suits are unique and stylish, the mechas are some of the coolest, the bad guys are a lot of fun, and the cast overall plays off of each other very well. Kakuranger just ticks all the boxes.
Number 12: Magiranger (2005)

This is a season which some may be surprised ended up on the list. The cast this time is all siblings, and they’re all likeable in their own way. In addition to likeable characters, I just found the season to have been visually unique and well designed. This season simply has a lot of heart and a lot of charm, making it one of the best in my eyes.
Number 11: Hurricaneger (2002)

This is another ninja themed season, and it’s one that I find to be really colourful, stylish, and charming. The main cast here are all full of likeability, and it’s another that just ticks all the boxes for me. I could go on, but I’d just be repeating myself, it’s really good.
I have one nitpick. Dark blue and light blue are fine, but I don’t like it when there are two red rangers. That is a purple ranger, you can’t tell me otherwise.
Number 10: Donbrothers (2022)
.jpg)
An annoying thing about modern sentai is that it’s gotten to the point now where they’ll end up getting a lot of criticism for simply being itself, they’re not allowed to be “back to basics” anymore and I just find that to be a really obnoxious and pointless criticism.
Regardless, Donbrothers kicks ass. The rangers are all charming and likeable, and the dynamic here is very exciting and out of the ordinary. The art style here is also incredible, resembling traditional Japanese watercolours. All of this combined makes it one of the best and most fun seasons for me.
Number 9: King-Ohger (2023)
.jpg)
This is another very modern season, featuring a straight up royalty theme. The story has to do with rulers of multiple kingdoms, with our red ranger becoming an unlikely ruler. There is no better term I have for this season other than it’s fire, and it’s hype. It remains to be seen how it will be remembered, but I think it belongs here on this list for the time being.
Number 8: Akibaranger (2012)
.jpg)
This one is a season that’s just built different, and probably the most difficult to recommend if you’re a new fan. It’s a comedy focused season, meant for the adult fans in the audience. It’s essentially a parody of sentai, and it’s pure fan service. There are two seasons, and they’re both equally as good.
Number 7: Megaranger (1997)
.jpg)
These next two seasons are huge nostalgia picks for me, as they were the very first seasons that I ever watched. This season as a whole is pretty cool, and was seen as cutting edge and high tech in the 90s. This is still one of my favourite transformation devices, despite how simple and dated it is, or perhaps it’s because of that. I still really like this cast a lot, and they each have starkly different personalities.
Number 6: Abaranger (2003)
.jpg)
This is another season which some may be surprised ended up on the list, as you could say there’s nothing super unique about it, but it’s all really solid. The suits look incredible, and it’s very entertaining, it’s not boring at all. It’s just a very well made season that still holds up after all this time, and it will continue to hold value because of that.
Number 5: Zenkaiger (2021)
.jpg)
Kicking off the Top 5 is my favourite modern season, and that’s Zenkaiger. This is a bit of a weird one because only one member of the team is a human, with the rest being mecha, but it’s what gives this season it’s own identity.
It’s a very lighthearted and humorous season, and it does a pretty good job of staying entertaining throughout. My only real gripe is it’s status as a “celebration season”, it doesn’t ruin the show or anything, but I tend to prefer it when stuff like that is kept subtle or self-contained.
Number 4: Jetman (1991)
.jpg)
Now, back in the day, I remember a lot of older fans saying that Power Rangers should’ve just skipped Carranger and took footage from Jetman instead. It’s not something I agree with, but I can understand why now because even to this day, Jetman is one of the best.
This is a bird and airplane themed season, and the suits are incredible. The characters are all really interesting and well written, so there’s a lot of depth to them. I don’t know man, Jetman is really that good.
Number 3: Dairanger (1993)
.jpg)
Alright, so, you guys know about Zyuranger? Well, I’m sorry to say, but Dairanger is way better. Oops. This season has some of the coolest looking suit designs ever, especially the helmets. The theme this time is Chinese Mythology, so there’s a lot of awesomeness to it as a result.
The rangers all get unique weapons, as well as various forms of Chinese martial arts. The only thing I can see being divisive is the white ranger being a really young kid, but it’s not something that I personally mind, at least when it’s done sparingly.
Number 2: Dekaranger (2004)
.jpg)
Listen to me, I love Doggie Kruger, he’s one of my favourite characters to have ever appeared in the entire franchise. This season is law enforcement themed, which isn’t my favourite, but it’s easy to get past that just because everything else is so hilarious and charming. I love all the characters, and honestly I can’t get enough of it, it easily cemented itself as one of my favourites.
Number 1: Gokaiger (2011)
.jpg)
This one is pretty infamous if you started with Power Rangers like I did because Megaforce was just so incredibly bad, it’s easily the worst, which makes it extra hilarious that Gokaiger ended up being as good as it was, I did not expect that.
The level of charm and sense of adventure in this season is unmatched. The dynamic of this team is near flawless, incredibly entertaining and charismatic.
The only real knock against this season is it’s status as a “celebration season”, which isn’t usually my thing, but the characters are entertaining enough as it is, so I was able to be okay with it. Pirates are also just one of my favourite themes and always has been, so there you go, you've won me over.
